Instrument TIPS:

Beware of cheap instruments. There are many cheap instruments online that look like real instruments. Please avoid these instruments, they make learning music harder than it needs to be.  These instruments are often found on Amazon or Walmart websites and have an unusually low cost. Stick with name brands like: Bach, Yamaha, Selmer, Holton, Conn, Jupiter, and Eastman, just to name a few. If you are unsure, send me an email and I will let you know.

RENT: All major music companies have some sort of rental program. This is a rent-to-own plan that is actually a good deal. The plan provides a really high quality beginner instrument and it covers all repairs, replaces broken parts, and the instrument can easily be changed if the student needs to make a switch. If the student continues in band they will eventually own the instrument or they can trade it in to get a more professional quality model along the way. Meyer music is our school’s preferred vendor and you can secure your rental by simply going to their website. If you use Meyer Music they visit the school weekly, they provide all students that rent an upgraded mouthpiece(which is rare in a music company), and they have on file what instrument brands I recommend.  It is okay to use other vendors, my preference is Meyer Music based on their outstanding service. Their online system is a piece of cake: https://meyer-music.net/aeRntSchoolSelect.aspx. There are also other companies around like GV music and West Michigan Band if you want to shop around a little. Meyer music services our school and visits weekly, making maintenance a breeze!

PURCHASE: You can purchase the instrument outright. There are many used and new instruments available at reputable music companies. Just heed the warning above about cheap instruments. This option will avoid monthly payments and could save you money in the long run, but maintenance is not covered (and it is likely the new students will need some repairs along the way). This option also makes it difficult to switch instruments if the fit isn’t as good as we thought at the onset. Make sure if you purchase a used instrument from someone, that you send it to a repair shop to have it looked over (Meyer Music is a great choice for this and I could send it in for you if you bring it to the meeting).

BORROW: You can borrow an instrument from someone. We also have a limited supply of instruments available for students. Especially the more expensive instruments like Tuba, Baritone, and French Horn. If you need to borrow an instrument from the school, please reach out to me so that I can check our inventory. Make sure if you borrow an instrument from someone (other than the school) you send it in to a repair shop to have it looked over (Meyer Music is a great choice for this and I could send it in for you if you bring it to the meeting).
